Dennis Bovell and full Dub Band

Thursday 18th April 2019 9pm

8 Ticket only, on sale at the Bar.

Tonight at our little bar in Darwen we are most honoured to have secured a visit from the famous Matumbi featuring Britain's reggae maestro Dennis Bovell and his full Dub Band.

From the days of his seminal band Matumbi and the radical days of punk, Dennis continues to be a massive presence, he has worked with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, The Slits and Linton Kwesi Johnson. Playing live today, the Dub Band's rock-solid horns and rhythm section never fail to move and groove.

Dennis Bovell is a producer, composer, re-mixer and bandleader. He produced albums by a wide variety of artists including I-Roy, The Thompson Twins, Sharon Shannon, Alpha Blondy, Bananarama, The Pop Group, Fela Kuti, The Slits, Orange Juice and Madness. He has also collaborated with poet, Linton Kwesi Johnson for much of his working life.

Barbados born Dennis Bovell moved to London and at school there made good friends with Nick Straker who was later to join Matumbi as their original keyboardist. Nick will once again tonight be playing with Dennis who is, it's got to be said, the heaviest bassist around, pumping out the deepest of body-shaking dub grooves.

"Dennis Bovell's contributions to reggae are huge - he was one of the original architects of lover's rock, a movement that put British reggae on the world map." - The Independent
